On March 25, 2017, our annual Youth Symposium took place at the West Scarborough Neighbourhood Community Centre (WSNCC). The day was filled with engaging workshops focused on providing innovative youth with the tools they need to make smart decisions! From adopting a healthy lifestyle to STEM careers and social action, our professional facilitators keep these teens moving and learning:
1. Healthy Choices - STEM

Richard Kyereboah is an established Investment Representative for wealth management group. He is a co-founder of Bantu App Inc, a beauty services discovery and booking app that connects clients to hairstylists. He also co-founded 101 Sense Inc.

Kwesi Parry Apponsah is currently a 5th year PhD candidate in computational aerodynamics research at University of Toronto. He’s the founder of KWAP Consulting Limited and co-founder/CTO of 101 Sense Inc, a Canadian startup that developed SKULADMIN which is a low cost and efficient educational software for schools in West Africa.

2. Healthy Living - Exercise for life

Brian Annin has over 10 years of experience in the sports industry as a professional soccer coach. He’s held positions within Toronto FC and several other clubs across Europe, South American, and Africa. As a mentor for at-risk-youth, Brian promotes a healthy lifestyle and sports as tools to live a meaningful and impactful life.

3. Healthy Generations - Social Action

Jodie Glean is a Doctoral student in Education and the Education and Communications Advisor in the Centre for Human Rights at York University. In September 2016, she established REACTCanada (Race Equity Advisory Consulting & Training) in order to bring conversations on race and racism to the forefront.

Thank you to all the facilitators that came out and made this day incredible for all the youth of the Boys & Girls Club! And, as always, thank you WNCC for partnering with us once again! We can't wait for next year!
The day finished with a social evening of food, drinks and painting with our friends, family and supporters. Not only did we discover that we have artists in our network, our Poodle Paint Night fundraiser was a success! Funds that were raised go towards next year's Youth Symposium. Thanks to everyone that came out!

On February 15, we went to the opening night for the 2017 Toronto Black Film Festival (TBFF) to watch the insightful documentary, Tell Them We Are Rising.  In its 4th year, the TBFF focuses on encouraging the development of the independent film industry and promoting more films on the reality of Black people from around the Globe. The event was sold out and the theatre was fully packed with movie enthusiasts of all ages and races. It's always refreshing to see so much diversity and support at black history events.

The opening night guest speaker was none other than the critically-acclaimed, NAACP Image and SAG award-winning actor, producer, activist and author Isaiah Washington. Tell Them We Are Rising, by the award-winning documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson, provides a historical account of historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) in the United States. From slavery to the present day, the film examines the impact HBCUs have had on American history, culture, and national identity.

We were delighted to have had the opportunity to attend this enlightening event along with fellow National PanHellenic Council members representing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., as well as one of our chapter charter members, Racquel Shaw who is an HBCU alumnae, having attended Benedict College in Columbia, SC.

In addition, Lambda Nu Sigma Chapter is a proud supporter of  Expanding Opportunities Western New York/Southern Ontario who's mission is to expose students to the higher educational opportunities at HBCUs.

Do you think education is important? Are you dedicated to community service? Could lifelong friendships be the fire that sparks up your life?

If so, Sigma Gamma Rho may be the organization for you!

Since 2013, members of Sigma Omega chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. have matriculated at Carleton University. This group of young women is well known for volunteering, giving and advocating in their community. They were the co-organizers of last summer's well-attended Sandra Bland vigil at Ottawa's Human Rights Monument. Over the past few years, Sigma Omega has donated school supplies, ice skates, food and provided scholarship opportunities to partners in the City of Ottawa. These young women successfully balance school, family and work with their unwavering dedication to carrying out the mission of Sigma Gamma Rho.

On Saturday, September 10, the ladies of the Sigma Omega chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (Carleton University) cordially invite interested women to attend their Fall Informational. This is an open invitation to all women who are interested in becoming a member or learning about the organization. Recommended attire for this event is "business casual." Attendees are asked to bring a resume and, if enrolled in an undergraduate university program, an unofficial transcript. The ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho look forward to seeing everyone on the 10th!

Greater Service, Greater Progress!
